Types of Dentures

Starting with Resin Dentures

We often get asked, “Which denture is best for me?” For patients new to dentures, we recommend starting with resin dentures (plastic dentures). It can take time to adjust to the feel of dentures due to initial discomfort.

To help you get used to wearing dentures, we may suggest not beginning with high-quality ones right away.
Even if you begin with high-quality dentures, it can be challenging to recognize their benefits because you are not yet accustomed to the denture experience. This can make wearing dentures itself difficult, and also makes it harder to compare and fully appreciate the advantages of materials.

Plastic Dentures (Resin Base)

The pink section of the denture, which forms the gums and base, is made from synthetic resin. Although the pink color helps it blend well with your gums, the design needs to be thicker for added strength.
These dentures are secured with metal clasps attached to the remaining teeth.
They can be repaired or fabricated using standard materials available at dental clinics, allowing for relatively quick repairs if they break or get damaged.

Non-Clasp Dentures

Non-clasp dentures are aesthetically pleasing without metal clasps.
However, these materials are less durable than metal and may require replacement more frequently, potentially every few years. They are suitable for visible areas, such as partial dentures for the front teeth.

Attachment Dentures

Attachment dentures use metal crowns fitted onto remaining teeth. These crowns and the denture’s internal attachment fit together like a lid on a can of tea. This mechanism provides strong stability for the denture. The metal used for crown is cobalt-chrome. Cobalt-chrome is safe for patients with metal allergies. Careful handling is required during insertion and removal, similar to when handling a can’s lid.

Metal Base Dentures

Metal base dentures have metal in the areas that contact the upper or lower jaws. The strength of the metal allows for a thinner design, reducing the sensation of a foreign object and minimizing gag reflex. Additionally, metal conducts heat well, making it easier to sense the temperature of food and drinks.

Magnetic Dentures

Magnetic dentures use magnetic metal in the attachment system, allowing for easy removal and reattachment. These dentures eliminate concerns about metal clasp fatigue and corrosion. They also utilize the remaining teeth, potentially eliminating the need for extractions in some cases.

Implant Overdentures

Implant overdentures use implants as a stable base for the denture. They are ideal for patients who find it difficult to maintain denture fixation or stability with mucosal support alone. Since the implants are securely anchored to the jawbone, the dentures remain stable and are less likely to shift.
